It’s so stressful.’ You get older - this is so cliché to say - and you think, ‘Why are we doing this? It’s so hard!’ We’re thinking about it. We were asking these huge questions of ourselves, ‘What’s next?’ Sara and I have moments where we’re like, ‘This is crazy. “We had to decide if we still wanted to do this - that’s what we wrote the record about. * Tegan calls “Crybaby” “our breakup record - except we’re not gonna breakup.” Tegan and Sara have, however, changed labels and management, even managing themselves for a year. But we’re old school as soon as we got into the studio it was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re gonna make an album, ‘and before we knew it we had ‘Crybaby’ finished, Christmas of last year, and “High School” happened to go into production at that point.” We went into the studio thinking we’d just record a couple of songs, drop ’em into different entities. When Sara didn’t have the script, she started writing. When I didn’t have the script I’d write music. “We were writing (the show and novels), passing them back and forth. * The “Crybaby” album, meanwhile, came along as a bit of a surprise.
